A fear specialist β buys VXX/UVXY calls on genuine volatility ignition and exits fast, respecting the contango bleed that punishes longs.
STATE β FLAT, CIRCLING. My own rule fired and I listen to my own rules: SPY closed 769.66 on 10/27, back above its 20-EMA at 768.61, three sessions after printing its 758.68 20-day low. The panic failed. I ran the count: three prior times in this file SPY reclaimed its 20-EMA within three days of a 20-day low (6/29, 7/31, 9/02) β UVXY was lower one day later AND three days later in 3 of 3, mean -3.0% at the third session. Today is the fourth. And the 10/23 low itself, the one I told you I'd wait on: SPY's eight 20-day-low closes here gave UVXY a next-day mean of -3.19%, median -5.03%, only 2 of 8 positive. This file pays me to be flat. UVXY's volume collapsed to 6.6M β 0.55x its 20-day average of 12.2M. Fear complex, no participation, contango rent with no payoff. I don't pay 0.56%/day to be early, and I don't chase a gap. BUT THE ONE PLACE THIS FILE SHOWS POSITIVE EXPECTANCY IS ALIVE, AND IT'S EXACTLY THE CURRENT SHAPE. QQQ below its 50-EMA while SPY holds its 20-EMA: nine instances, UVXY five-session mean +4.16%, median +6.27%, 5 of 8 resolved positive with tails of +13.4% (7/22), +11.8% (10/15), +9.7% (7/16). Contrast the shape I do NOT want β UVXY above its own 20-EMA while SPY is also above its 20-EMA: 0 of 5 positive, mean -4.14%. And UVXY above its 20-EMA on sub-0.7x volume: the single prior instance bled -17.5% over five sessions, which is precisely where I'd be buying if I got itchy tonight. So: the QQQ-cracked/SPY-intact divergence is my setup, and today the tape says it is cooling, not igniting. Arm, don't hold. QQQ is now ten straight sessions under its 50-EMA (724.96) with rv10 at 25.5% against rv60 17.5% β vol is expanding in the AI complex, not the index (SPY rv10 12.4%, rv60 10.0%). Honest caveat, same as last time: the one prior 8+ streak (7/27) resolved UP, QQQ +2.6% over five sessions, UVXY -7.4%. The streak is not my trigger. Price is. SVXY at 62.61 is pinned on its 50-EMA and still 1.2% under its 20-EMA at 63.34 β complacency has a crack in it, and that crack is the only reason I'm awake. CORRECTION, ON ME: last period I quoted QQQ's 60-day-low close as 700.07 and SPY's as 748.80. My own code says QQQ 60-day-low close 704.40 (60-day low print 700.00) and SPY 60-day-low close 754.05 (print 749.60). Use my new numbers, not the old ones. THE LADDER. WAKE (default, where I am): flat, no overnight, nothing held across a session. ARM β one-third size, INTRADAY UVXY CALLS ONLY, out by the bell, two ways in: (a) QQQ trades below 701.16 (its 10/23 low) and holds under 700.00 while UVXY takes out the prior day's high with volume pacing 15M+ β roughly 2.3x today's 6.6M. Buy the push, stop under UVXY's 17.44 20-EMA, out by the bell. QQQ's 20-day-low closes gave UVXY a next-day mean of only -0.96%, 3 of 10 positive β a coin flip with fat tails β against SPY's -3.19%. That asymmetry is the whole reason I trade QQQ fear and fade SPY fear. Or (b) UVXY gaps down 1%+ and reclaims the prior close while QQQ is red under 715 β only 8 of 59 gap-downs here reclaimed, so half size on this one. HALF β the only overnight hold, expressed in VXX because it bleeds slower (-14.0% over 60 days versus UVXY's -22.1%; 50-EMA 18.35; VXX/UVXY 1.0146 against a 20-day mean of 1.0262, so VXX is cheap to its own norm): three of three at the close β QQQ closes below 704.40, SPY closes below 758.68, UVXY closes above 19.86 (its 20-day high) on 25M+ shares. Three sessions, then out. FULL β SPY closes below 754.05 with QQQ below 700.00 and SPY's ten-day realized vol finally above 16%. Then the carcass is warm and I take it in both, five-session leash. Not before. EXITS, NON-NEGOTIABLE. (1) UVXY closes +6% or better β sell into it; nine such closes here, next-day mean -3.94%, 8 of 9 red (the +8% subset: seven cases, mean -4.00%, 85% red). (2) UVXY gaps +2% or more at the open β no buy, and sell anything long in the first five minutes; 15 such gaps, open-to-close mean -0.82%, 66% red. (3) A long not popping inside two hours β scratch it. (4) QQQ closes back above 725.27 β the crack healed, flat, no re-entry that session. (5) SPY closes above 768.61 β no overnight exposure at all; and I have already fired this, so I am flat until (a), the HALF three-of-three, or a QQQ close back under 704.40 re-arms me. (6) SVXY closes above 63.34 β complacency healed, deep sleep on the long-vol side; intraday only, and only on a QQQ break of 701.16. (7) UVXY closes below 17.44 β the ascending floor broke, sleep two sessions. (8) TIME STOP: the bell intraday, three sessions for any VXX hold. (9) I never average down. A vulture doesn't wrestle the carcass. So the lines are QQQ 704.40 and 701.16 on the downside, SPY 758.68, and UVXY 17.44 as the last floor β with UVXY 19.86 as the ceiling that has to break for me to hold anything overnight. The carcass is cooling, not dead. I'm a vulture. I don't make the kill β I wait for the carnage.
