Weekly momentum in energy β buys relative-strength leaders breaking out with crude, puts on the laggards rolling over.
Oil leads, the leaders lever it, I ride the strongest one β but the tape changed hands on 10-27 and I'm not going to pretend it didn't. XLE took out a new six-month high at 69.70 and closed 68.21, BELOW the prior day's low of 68.62. That's a key reversal at the highs. Here's the part that keeps me long: it came on 0.99x, not 1.3x. Nobody distributed. The EMA stack is still stacked and still rising (67.90 / 66.69 / 64.48) and XLE is only +0.45% over its 10-EMA β the extension already reset itself. So this is a pause in an uptrend, not a roll. The regime line is now the 10-EMA at 67.90: hold that and I stay long the leaders, a close under it and I'm a quarter, under 66.69 I'm flat, no argument. XLE has to reclaim 69.64 before I add anything new. Between 67.90 and 69.86 I hold and I do not chase. The real story is INTRASECTOR, and it's the cleanest rotation I've seen in weeks. Downstream got taken out back: MPC -7.36% on 1.53x, closed 0.05 of range, through 458.69 AND its 450.42 20-EMA; PSX -7.03% on 1.31x, through 283.66 and its 279.40 20-EMA. That's genuine distribution, not drift β a crack-spread unwind after diesel at $6.28 and cracks at $42/bbl, peak-margin conditions getting de-rated into prints. Meanwhile upstream and services closed green or near-flat on the same day: SLB +1.88%, HAL +0.51%, COP -2.3% on 0.96x, CVX -1.63% on 0.89x. Barrel up on Middle East risk, upstream up, downstream down. The stock, the sector and the commodity are pointing the same way for the E&Ps and the service names, and pointing the opposite way for the refiners. I trade the side where all three agree. So: long upstream and services, ZERO long downstream. RANKED LONG. COP is still the horse and still the only name on the sheet with pure air above it β 147.96, zero prior swing highs above the close in 80 bars, xrs20 +7.11 best on the sheet. It failed 152.77 twice (10-26 high 152.00, 10-27 high 151.56 β a lower high) but it held the 147.55 breakout shelf and gave back the day on 0.96x. That's a fade, not a break. Buy the 146.5-148 retest for weeklies, core equity over that. Add ONLY on a close over 152.77 with 1.1x+ β that gate has not paid in three sessions (1.24x, 0.89x, 0.96x) and I'm not paying up into a lower high. Half under 146.11, out under the 10-EMA 145.68. SLB is the tell of the whole day: +1.88% and closed 0.86 of range while the sector reversed, reclaimed the 51.34 50-EMA and cleared the 53.45 shelf, best r5 on the sheet again at +7.85. It's already reported (10-23 beat), so it's the one clean optionable lane with NO print in front of it. Three-quarter size, stop under 52.50. HAL is the other print-free lane β beat 10-23 at 0.60 vs 0.58, closed 0.90 of range on a -2% XLE day, through the 35.27 gate, above all three EMAs. Half size: 0.75x volume and it's capped at 35.62 with 36.08 then 38.06 overhead β catch-up trade, I don't size it like a leader, stop under 34.91. OXY is the #2 E&P by relative strength (xrs20 +3.34) and it's sitting exactly on its 10-EMA 62.53 after closing 0.10 of range β that's a decision point, not an entry: I lift only on a reclaim of 64.14/64.96, and if it loses 62.53 it goes back to the bench. Possible early-Nov print, so equity/half size only. HANDS OFF THE PRINTS. XOM is the one I want to warn on loudest: it failed 184.88, closed 179.91 at 0.03 of range on 1.25x β the heaviest volume in 20 sessions β straight back under 180.31, one day before a 10-30 print. That's distribution into a number. No weeklies, no long, and if it loses 178.51 then 173.60 the whole group is rolling. CVX is still the laggard of the big three (xrs20 +0.83); it tested 227.63 and closed back over the 227.98 line, prints 10-30. Information only: over 234.08 the integrated bid is widening, under 227.63 the group floor is cracking. PSX prints 10-28 β weeklies go flat two sessions ahead, no exceptions, and I will NOT buy puts into a $12.02 (+377% YoY) positive-ESP print. Watch the 50-EMA at 262.48 instead; that's the last prop, and a close under it puts the whole downstream in downtrend and gives me my short side AFTER the numbers. MPC technically fired my old combo (under 458.69 with XLE under 68.51) but it prints early November, so no weeklies. The put trade is a close under the 414.53 50-EMA with volume, post-print. Until then, hands off. FANG stays OFF the sheet β 0.65x, xrs20 +0.32, still 5.7% under its own high, prints 11-02. Right direction, no volume, no slot. Money management for the period: the uptrend is intact but it just printed its first warning, so I run 60-70% of normal long risk and I let the 10-EMA of XLE be the judge. Trade the close, not the impulse β and I do not buy weeklies through a print.
