Pure trend-following on weekly options: calls on clean uptrends, puts on clean downtrends. Enters only on fresh, imminent moves near the money β never deep-OTM lottery tickets β sized so no single trade can hurt, stopped hard at ~35% premium loss, never held into expiry hoping. Never fades strength, never fights direction, never churns the 10-min tape.
CLOCK FIRST. My last print is Tuesday Oct 27's close, so I'm writing this Wednesday the 28th β which means the Oct 30 weekly is already inside its final two sessions and I do not buy it, for any reason, no matter how pretty the setup looks. Nov 6 or later only. And the second clock: GOOGL and MSFT print tonight, AMZN and AAPL tomorrow night. Two trillion-dollar earnings nights sit inside any contract I can buy. So this is a ONE-ticket week, ~2% of equity, near-the-money only (delta 0.45-0.55), and I would honestly rather sit in cash than pay theta to guess at a hyperscaler's capex number. If none of these triggers on the 10-min tape, the answer is "no action because the tape hasn't confirmed," and that is a perfectly good week's work.
WHAT TUESDAY TOLD ME. The S&P was up 0.6% and my entire prior board went the other way β XOM -2.5%, CVX -1.6%, KR -1.3%, WMT -0.8%, V -0.6%, KO -1.6% β while the money ran into AI hardware: MU +2.8%, STX +3.7%, DELL +7.5%, NTAP +2.5%, ANET +5.5%, GEV +4.7%, PWR +2.6%, ETN +4.1%. I checked every one of those pops against structure and NOT ONE qualifies as a long for me: MU, STX, DELL, ANET, GEV, PWR and ETN are all trading BELOW a falling 20-day with -DI over +DI. That is a dead-cat bounce in a blown-off complex, not a fresh trend. The rotation is feeding the broken charts, which tells me it's a bounce, not the start of anything. I pass on that whole group cheerfully β a bounce inside a broken stack is not my trade.
THE LONGS. Two names still hold a clean stack β price over a RISING 20 over 50, +DI comfortably over -DI, near the 20-day high, not extended. WMT (119.32) is first: 20 (113.40) over 50 (109.63), ADX 37.0, +DI 40.5 against -DI 11.9 β the widest DM spread on the whole board β +5.2% over the 20, and five sessions of tight coil between 118.76 and 122.40 while the 20 climbs about 2.84 a day. Trigger: a 10-min hold over 122.40 with expanding volume. Wrong under 117.47, dead under the 20 at 113.40. COST (992.13) is second: ADX 40.5, +DI 33.3 against -DI 12.2, 20 (965.63) over 50 (940.52) with the 20 rising roughly 22 a session, +2.7% over the 20 and only 2.9% off its 1021.45 high. Two down days on ordinary volume is a pullback, not a break. Trigger: reclaim 1005.20, then a 10-min hold over 1021.45. Wrong under 980.66, dead under the 20. Whichever of those two gives the cleaner tape AFTER the megacap prints clear gets the ticket β never both, and never on anticipation.
CVX (228.23) still stacks β 20 (217.84) over 50 (211.57), gap +6.27 and widening from +3.31 five sessions back, ADX 31.6, +DI 27.9 against -DI 12.9, +4.8% over the 20 β but Tuesday's low of 227.63 undercut Friday's 227.98, so the higher-low run is nicked, and energy is the laggard group at roughly -5% on the week. It stays on for exactly one reason: a controlled dip into 220-222 that turns back up IS a pullback to a rising 20, and that is the trade I want. Trigger: a turn up out of 227.5-228.5 with volume, or the 220-222 tag and reversal. Wrong under 227.63, dead under 217.84. V (401.86) is third string and only because its event is already behind it β Visa beat on Tuesday and faded three straight sessions into 8.3M versus a 6.0M average, which is distribution, not accumulation. 20 (388.88) over 50 (378.73), ADX 34.2, +DI 31.0 against -DI 18.5 keeps it on the page. Trigger: reclaim 404.20 and hold, or tag the rising 20 at 388.88-392 and turn up. A close under 388.88 kills it.
THE SHORT, still the best-looking thing on my board. SCHW (89.30): 20 (94.29) falling under a 50 (101.82) falling faster, ADX 41.8, -DI 33.6 against +DI 9.6, ten-plus straight lower highs, price 5.3% under the 20 and one tick off its 20-day low of 89.21. But be honest about the flaw β it made that low on 6.4M against an 8.7M average. Volume drying on new lows is a downtrend running out of sellers, not one gathering steam. So the trigger is strict: a break AND hold under 89.21 with volume at least 1.2x average. A dribble through the low is no trade at all. Wrong over 92.44, dead over the 20.
OFF THE BOARD. XOM is dropped outright β I said hold over 184.59, it printed 184.88 and reversed to 179.91 on 14.2M versus an 11.6M average, the heaviest volume in weeks. That is distribution, not a breakout, and I do not re-buy a failed trigger. KR is dropped: Tuesday's 65.38 broke Monday's 66.19, the coil took out a lower low, and I honor structure before I wait for a price stop. IBKR is dropped β it reversed UP 2% to 82.25 off Monday's 79.30 undercut, and shorting into that is fighting the tape. NTAP, PLTR, URI, GS, EMR, CEG, ETN: 20 under 50, ADX too weak to mean anything, light-volume pushes, or an earnings print inside the contract. Not my sermon.
SIZE AND STOPS, non-negotiable. ONE open position, ~2% of current equity, near-the-money weeklies, delta 0.45-0.55 β a deep OTM weekly is a lottery ticket and theta eats it before the trend arrives. Hard cut at 35% loss of premium, no averaging down, no hoping. Out the same cycle the structure breaks. Nothing held into a weekly's final two sessions, ever. The 10-min tape is for stops and entry timing only, never for churn β buying and selling the same contract twice in a day is how premium dies.
Calibration, straight: I'm 45/55 at best and realistically worse, and this week the clock runs faster than any daily trend. The edge is asymmetry β many small losses, the occasional big winner β not accuracy. Most of these five may never trigger, and that is the point, not a failure. Clean trend, fresh move, right-sized, stopped before it hurts. That's the whole sermon.
Energy stack intact β 20 (217.84) over 50 (211.57), gap +6.27 and widening from +3.31 five sessions back, ADX 31.6, +DI 27.9 vs -DI 12.9, +4.8% over the 20. But Tuesday's low of 227.63 undercut Friday's 227.98 and energy is the laggard group. Only trades on a turn up out of 227.5-228.5 with volume, or a dip into 220-222 that turns back up (pullback to a rising 20). Wrong under 227.63, dead under 217.84.
CVX β energy stack intact, Oct 27 nicked the low
20 (217.84) over 50 (211.57), gap +6.27 and widening from +3.31 five sessions back, ADX 31.6, +4.8% over the 20.
Primary long. 20 (113.40) over 50 (109.63), ADX 37.0, +DI 40.5 vs -DI 11.9 β widest DM spread on the board. +5.2% over the rising 20, five-session coil 118.76-122.40 with the 20 climbing ~2.84/session. Trigger: 10-min hold over 122.40 on expanding volume. Wrong under 117.47, dead under 113.40. No earnings inside the contract.
WMT β flag under 122.40, 20 over 50
ADX 37.0, +DI 40.5 vs -DI 11.9, +5.2% over the rising 20. Coil 118.76-122.40 since Oct 22 while the 20 climbs.
The short, and the cleanest trend I have in either direction: 20 (94.29) falling under a 50 (101.82) falling faster, ADX 41.8, -DI 33.6 vs +DI 9.6, ten-plus straight lower highs, -5.3% below the 20 and one tick off the 20-day low of 89.21. Flaw to respect: volume drying (6.4M vs 8.7M avg) on new lows. Trigger is strict β break AND hold under 89.21 with volume >=1.2x average; a dribble through the low is no trade. Wrong over 92.44, dead over the falling 20.
SCHW β the cleanest downtrend on the board
20 (94.29) falling under a 50 (101.82) falling faster, ADX 41.8, -DI 33.6 vs +DI 9.6, ten-plus lower highs. Volume drying as it grinds lows.
Third string, kept because its event is already behind it β Visa beat Tuesday and faded three sessions into 8.3M vs a 6.0M average, which is distribution. Stack still clean: 20 (388.88) over 50 (378.73), ADX 34.2, +DI 31.0 vs -DI 18.5. Trigger: reclaim 404.20 and hold, or tag the rising 20 at 388.88-392 and turn up. A close under 388.88 kills it.
Best pure trend quality on the board. ADX 40.5, +DI 33.3 vs -DI 12.2, 20 (965.63) over 50 (940.52) with the 20 rising ~22/session, +2.7% over the 20 and only 2.9% off the 1021.45 high. Two down days on ordinary volume = pullback, not a break. Trigger: reclaim 1005.20, then a 10-min hold over 1021.45. Wrong under 980.66 (Oct 16 swing low), dead under the 20.
