Tuesday was not a crude event. It was a refining event, and the tape drew the line for me. MPC went 470.64 to 435.98, -7.36%, closing 5% into its range on 1.49x volume, through both the 10-EMA (459.24) and the 20-EMA (450.42). PSX went 288.85 to 268.53, -7.03%, 6% into range on 1.29x, through its 10 and 20 and sitting 2.3% above a 50-EMA at 262.48. Meanwhile the upstream complex held every single 10-EMA it owns: XOM 179.91 vs 178.51, CVX 228.23 vs 225.76, COP 147.96 vs 145.68, FANG 204.48 vs 201.41, OXY 62.73 vs 62.53. Crude is holding. The product crack broke. I called that crack roll two weeks ago, got squeezed out of the MPC short at 472 on a 478 print that ran on 0.76x, and the tape delivered the outcome two days later. I own the loss and I own the read β being early on a correct thesis is still a loss, and that is what stops are for. Now it is the tell, not the trade: I am not shorting a refiner that is still 5% above a 50-EMA rising 25 points per ten sessions, into an earnings date, two days after exactly that trade took my money.
So the barrel says up but the money has rotated β out of the crack, into the iron. SLB is the trade. It closed 54.08, up 1.88% on a day XLE fell 2.05%, high 54.34, its third consecutive higher close, on a five-day volume average of 1.16x. It has now cleared and held the 51.13/51.24/51.15 lid that turned it back nine times, and it sits above the 10 (51.35), the 20 (50.87) and the 50 (51.34) with the 50's slope all the way back to -0.25 from -0.47 a week ago. RSI 63.4, only 1.92 ATR over its twenty, and 11% of air to the 60.10 six-month high. It is the only name in this book that is post-earnings, in an uptrend, on the right side of every average, and printing relative strength on a red sector tape. Full size weekly calls, 51.15 is the line, and a close under 52.50 trims me back. XLE is the barrel instrument behind it β 68.21, still over the 10-EMA at 67.90 and the 20 at 66.69, 20 rising 2.71 and 50 rising 1.82 in ten sessions. It gave back the 68.48/68.78 shelf, so this is a failed retest, not a chase; I scale into XLE weekly calls on a reclaim of 68.78, not before.
The core holds stay full size with trails only, and the reason is the calendar, not the chart: XOM and CVX print 10/30, COP is inside a week of its number. XOM's RSI has cooled from 85 to 64.6 and it still closed above its 10-EMA on 1.22x β that is a rest, not a reversal β but no new money inside a week of a print, so trails only: XOM 176.79, CVX 223.70, COP 143.80. FANG is a flat no-trade and it is out of the book entirely: 207.17 never got a volume close above it, five-day volume is 0.81x its twenty, and it prints 11/2. No trend, no trade. OXY failed β 62.73 back under the 63.77 trigger on 0.84x, so I sell what I have and it needs a fresh 63.77 volume close to be a name again. HAL is the one addition worth watching: it has sprung out of a flat cluster with all three averages inside 0.5 of each other at 33.72/33.91/34.17, but today was 0.76x and the 50 is flat to a tenth of a point. Close above 35.70 on 1.2x and I buy it; until then it is a coil with no fuel. And PSX/MPC stay on the tape as my crack thermometer: if MPC takes out its 50 at 414.53 after the print with that slope rolling over, the crack short is finally a trend trade and I will take it β but only then, not one day into a pullback in a rising 50. The switch is unchanged and non-negotiable: XLE 66.835, the 10/20 low that got pierced to 66.28 on 10/22. Close back under it and the whole long barrel book flips to XLE puts for the 20-EMA and then the 50. Energy chops sideways for weeks β that is what FANG is screaming β so between 66.835 and 69.86 I stay long the barrel, full size in the services name and nowhere else.
The trade. Through the 51.13/51.24/51.15 lid, above all three EMAs, +1.88% on a -2.05% XLE day, 5d vol 1.16x, post-earnings. Full size weekly calls; 51.15 the line, 52.50 trims, 60.10 the target.
SLB β through the 51.15 lid, sector down 2% and it prints +1.9%
Daily. Three EMAs reclaimed; 51.13/51.24 lid now the line.
Crack thermometer, not a position. -7.03% through the 10/20-EMAs to 2.3% above the 50 at 262.48 on 1.29x. No short into an uptrending 50; below 262.48 the whole refining complex is off limits.
PSX β the crack tell just broke: -7.0% to the 50-EMA
Daily. Closed 6% of range on 1.3x through the 10/20-EMAs.
Conditional long. Sprung out of a flat 33.72/33.91/34.17 cluster but today 0.76x with a flat 50-EMA. Buy weekly calls only on a close above 35.70 on 1.2x.
The barrel itself, no single-name earnings risk. Above the 10 (67.90) and 20 (66.69) with both rising. Failed retest of the 68.48/68.78 shelf β scale in only on a reclaim of 68.78. Switch to puts below 66.835.
