Tuesday answered what Monday only hinted: the thrust failed everywhere at once. XLE poked 69.70 against Monday's 69.86 and closed 68.21 at ten percent of its range — nineteen straight closes over the 10-EMA and the first one that ended on the low. COP failed 152.77 and closed 147.96 off RSI 77 and seventeen sessions above its 10-EMA. CVX failed it a second time (232.27 after 234.08) and closed 228.23. And XOM, the one I swore I wouldn't fade, made a new all-time high at 184.88 and closed 179.91 dead on the low, twenty sessions above the 10-EMA snapped in an afternoon. That's my tell and I still won't trade it into the 10/30 print — XOM, CVX and MPC all carry prints inside the next five sessions, so half size anywhere near one. So the short book goes from half size to full: XLE puts on a close under 68.05, targets 66.69 then 66.17 then 64.48, dead over 69.86 and the whole book stands down if XLE closes back over it; 67.76, the thrust bar's low, is the master switch and every short leg stays half size until XLE closes under that. CVX puts while it holds under 230.53, targets 224.19 then 220.58 then 218.05, dead over 232.27. COP puts under 149.24, targets 146.11 then 140.70 then 134.78, dead over 152.77. OXY is the odd one — two rejections at 64.95 and Tuesday an undercut of the 62.68 low by a dime that closed back above it. A failed low is not a short signal, it's a coin, so I take whichever close breaks the coil: puts under 62.58 (61.42 then 60.27), calls over 64.96, and I don't guess in the middle.
The honest half of the book, with one confession: MPC ran me over. I bought the refiners as the catch-up trade Monday and Tuesday they gapped seven percent lower — MPC 435.98 from 470.64, PSX 268.53 from 288.85, both closing at five percent of range on rising volume, the crude spike landing as a margin tax exactly as the bears said. That call is dead, I am not averaging it, and it is now a fade-the-panic watch rather than a position: MPC held the 9/21 shelf at 431.08, and I want calls for the reversion to 450.42 then 465.55 only after the low fails — a session that trades under 434.24 and closes back over 440, or a clean reclaim of 448.38, with a stop on a close under the 50-EMA at 414.53. What is actually working is the pair that never overshot: SLB closed 54.08 over the 53.45 trigger, third session holding the post-earnings gap, back above the 50-EMA at 51.34, and green 1.9% on a day the sector lost 2% — calls for 54.58 then 56.24 then 59.25, dead on a close under 51.75. HAL is the same idea one laggard further out: beat on 10/23, only 1.7 ATRs over the 50, still 18% under its high — calls on a close over 35.70, targets 36.43 then 38.06, dead under 34.41. Weeklys, two to five sessions, closes and never intraday pokes, no averaging, a stop is a stop. The barrel overshoots, the stocks overshoot more — I sell the overshoot back to them, and on Tuesday it stopped going up.
The working long. Over the 53.45 trigger, three sessions holding the earnings gap, back above the 50-EMA, green on a red sector day. Targets 54.58 / 56.24 / 59.25, dead under 51.75.
SLB — the only green light in a red complex
Beat 10/23, reversed 2.4 ATRs from 49.48, held the gap three sessions, closed 54.08 over the 53.45 trigger while everything else bled 2-7%. Long, targets are the Aug highs.
Coil, not a trend. Two rejections at 64.95, failed undercut of 62.68 on Tuesday. Puts on a close under 62.58, calls on a close over 64.96, nothing in between.
OXY — coil, and I take whichever close breaks it
Two rejections at 64.95, and 10/27 undercut the 62.68 low by a dime and closed back over it. Failed low cuts both ways: puts under 62.58, calls over 64.96.
Refiner catch-up long is dead — 7.4% down on double volume, close at 5% of range. Held the 9/21 shelf at 431.08; calls only after the low fails (reclaim 448.38), stop under the 50-EMA at 414.53.
MPC — my refiner long got run over; now I wait for the low to fail
-7.4% on 2x volume, close 435.98 at 5% of range, into the 9/21 shelf at 431.08. No calls until the low stalls; stop would be the 50-EMA at 414.53.
Laggard that never overshot: beat on 10/23, 1.7 ATRs over the 50, 18% under its high. Calls on a close over 35.70, targets 36.43 / 38.06, dead under 34.41.
Master switch. Failed 69.86 and closed 68.21 at 10% of range after 19 closes over the 10-EMA. Puts under a 68.05 close; 67.76 is the line that puts the whole short book at full size.
First failed new high in the complex (234.08 then 232.27 rejected). Puts while under 230.53, targets 224.19 / 220.58 / 218.05, dead over 232.27. Half size into the print.
The most stretched name on the sheet — RSI 77 at the 100th percentile, 17 closes over the 10-EMA, 3.7 ATRs over the 50 — and Tuesday it bent. Puts under 149.24, dead over 152.77.
