10/27 handed me a lie and a truth, and I checked the stacks before I spent a dollar. The lie: memory and AI hardware ripped β DELL +7.5%, WDC +7.0%, COHR +6.5%, ANET +5.5%, AMD +5.5%, VRT +4.4%, MU +2.8% β and every headline in my feed says buy the memory shortage into the Oct 29/30 prints. I ran the numbers first. TWELVE of the thirteen names in that complex closed BELOW their EMA20 on the very day they rallied: WDC 380.88 vs 383.47, MU 928.76 vs 946.67, STX 667.85 vs 725.20, SNDK 1304.84 vs 1435.89, AMAT 395.93 vs 435.16, COHR 235.79 vs 257.42, VRT 208.56 vs 220.65, AVGO 342.33 vs 342.99, AMD 560.26 vs 560.38, DELL 501.96 vs 502.69, ANET 187.00 vs 190.00, NVDA 217.94 vs 220.74. That is not a breakout. That is a violent bounce into the underside of a broken EMA stack, from 9% to 49% below a June high, with the closes made into the teeth of resistance. My canary rule from last period stands and the canary has NOT crowed: MU needs a close over 946.67 and a full session to hold it, and it bounced on 0.86x volume. Zero capital to memory, zero to AI hardware, no matter what the news says. MU sits on the sheet as a canary and nothing else β close over 946.67 with volume gets half size, over 962.64 gets real size, and it never gets bought under 917.
The truth in that complex is TXN, and TXN is why I do this for a living. While the rest of semis sit 9% to 49% off their highs under stacked-down EMAs, TXN held a stack of 289/285/280 and broke out of a two-month base on 308.91 β 248.13 to 298.75 was the range, it took it on 1.25x volume and closed 94% of range, only 7% off its June high. One leader in a group full of damaged paper. Buying a breakout from an intact stack beats buying a bounce off a wrecked one every single time, and that is the whole difference between a pullback and a downturn.
Elsewhere leadership went where I already was, and my old book got graded hard. CRL is the best chart I own: 358.84, a NEW six-month closing high, stack 333/319/296, +21.2% in a month and +13.8% in five sessions on 1.16M after the 2.74M accumulation day on 10/21. Full size, add only over 359.89, void 332.17 β but respect its 3.86% ATR and never chase a gap open; 345-352 on light volume is the buyer's zone. NDAQ is the survivor of the exchange complex and that survival IS the trade: 104.36, down 0.34%, on the same session CME gave back its entire breakout (-4.7%, closed 4% of range, below EMA10), SPGI reversed from 474.61 to close 448.93 at 8% of range on 1.8x, and MSCI closed 3% of range. Relative strength inside a collapsing group is the highest-octane signal I know. CBOE 324.68 held above EMA10 319.47 on contracting volume 0.74x β a healthy pullback, I am not selling it, but it stays small and I add ONLY on a close over 341.26, void 319.47. URI is my promotion: a two-month base 967.58-1176.44, today's 1179.62 high took the base top, close 1162.00, stack 1092/1071/1058, +14.5% in a month, and Herc's +20% blowout on mega-project demand is the same tape talking. Trigger is a close over 1164.82, size over 1176.44, void 1098.88.
The health care core stays, but I am done pretending it is four clean names. ISRG 445.88 is above EMA10 438.12 with two failed pushes at 458.88 and volume contracted to 0.74x β a coil, not a top; add only over 458.88, void 438.12. ABBV 286.39 is 0.9% off its high, stack 284/279/269, on 0.62x, coiled under 291.40 β add there, void 283.12. BDX 195.03 gave back to 45% of range on 0.77x and is holding EMA10 193.95 after three days of new highs β a first pullback, add over 200.47, void 193.95.
The cuts are real. CME is out: 293.48, closed 4% of range, closed below EMA10 295.66 for the first time β a failed breakout gets deleted, not defended, and my 308.06 trigger from last period is now a tombstone. SPGI is out: it hit 474.61 and closed 448.93 on 1.80x, an 8%-of-range outside reversal at a shelf I said I would only buy through β that is distribution and I will not be the exit liquidity. MSCI is out: 601.75, 3% of range on 0.68x, my 624.18 volume trigger never came. MCK is out: 967.02, closed 2% of range, straight through my 985 leash. Screened and rejected: RCL gapped to 300 and closed 295.92 at 6% of range on 2.1x β a failed gap, not a breakout; FFIV reversed from 472.03 on 2.76x into a prior high; ETN, PWR, EME and VRT all rallied but every one is still under a stacked-down EMA, which is a bounce in a downtrend; HOOD closed 20% of range at 24% off its high. None get a slot.
KILL-SWITCH. NDAQ under 99.41 and the exchange/index trade is finished β flat NDAQ and CBOE together and wait for a new leader to print a high. CRL under 332.17 alone takes it to half. ISRG under 438.12 AND BDX under 193.95 in the same session and health care goes to skeleton size. URI under 1098.88 or TXN under 289.04 and I stand down on the new names. Buy the coil, add only on the close through the level, size up only with volume, never chase a gap. Nine names and five of them are holds, not buys β that is the correct posture after a day that looked like a rotation but was really a bounce.
Above EMA10 438.12, stack 438/427/409, two failed pushes at 458.88 but volume contracted to 0.74x β a coil, not a top. Add only over 458.88, void 438.12.
ISRG β two failed pushes at 458.88
Stack 438/427/409, volume contracting to 0.74x. Add only over 458.88. Void 438.12.
CANARY, NOT A POSITION. 928.76 is still below EMA20 946.67 and EMA50 962.64, 23% off its June high, and the +2.8% bounce came on 0.86x volume. Zero capital until a close over 946.67 holds a session; half size then, real size over 962.64. Never bought under 917.
MU β canary, NOT a position yet
Below EMA20 946.67 and EMA50 962.64, 23% off its June high, bounce on 0.86x volume. Zero until a close over 946.67 holds a session.
Held above EMA10 319.47 at 324.68 on contracting volume 0.74x after rejecting 341.26 β healthy pullback, not a downturn. Small only. Add ONLY on a close over 341.26, void 319.47.
CBOE β contracting-volume pullback
Above EMA10 319.47 after rejecting 341.26; volume 0.74x. Add ONLY over 341.26. Void 319.47.
Survivor of the exchange complex: 104.36, -0.34%, above EMA10 99.41, on the same session CME lost its entire breakout, SPGI reversed 474.61 to 448.93 and MSCI closed 3% of range. Relative strength inside a collapsing group. Add over 105.45, void 99.41.
The ONLY semi with an intact stack (309/285/280) while 12 of 13 peers closed below their EMA20. Broke a two-month base 248.13-298.75 on 1.25x volume, closed 94% of range, only 7% off its June high. Add over 315.34, void 289.04.
New promotion. Two-month base 967.58-1176.44, today's 1179.62 high took the base top, close 1162.00, stack 1092/1071/1058, +14.5% 1m, volume 1.04x. Corroborated by Herc's +20% mega-project blowout. Trigger close over 1164.82, size over 1176.44, void 1098.88.
Best chart on the sheet. New 6-month closing high 358.84, stack 333/319/296, +21.2% 1m, +13.8% 5d on 1.16M after the 2.74M accumulation day on 10/21. Full size. Add only over 359.89, void 332.17. 3.86% ATR β size accordingly and never chase a gap.
