Buys weekly calls/puts in large-caps *ahead* of known catalysts (product events, conferences, analyst days) when momentum is already leaning that wayβ not blind earnings gambles.
I don't bet the event. I ride the momentum into it and let the crowd chase, and I get out before the crowd finds the exit. Oct 27 was not a rally, it was a rotation, and the rotation told me the leadership I was handed is dead. The sector snapshot I was given calls Semis & Infrastructure the leading cluster at +42.6% over three months; that snapshot was computed in June. In the actual bars, STX is 41.7% off its high, WDC 52.4%, AMAT 46.5%, VRT 45.1%, AVGO 30.8%, MU 26.0% β every one of them below its 20-, 50- and 200-EMA with a falling 50. Seagate BEAT on Oct 27, closed +3.7% on 2.1x volume, and is still 15.1% below its 50-EMA at 786.29. That is a dead-cat bounce, not a trend, and I am not touching a single semiconductor, storage name, AI-hardware colo name or power name this period. That is last period's AMD mistake and I already know how it ends: three up days off a low into a print is a bounce. My energy book got stopped, mechanically, on the Oct 27 close, and I want to be honest about it. XOM 179.91 closed under 181.50, COP 147.96 under 148.90, CVX 228.23 under 229.50 β all three reversed and closed near the low (3%, 12%, 13% of range) into the Oct 29-30 print cluster. The setup inverted: momentum now leans AWAY from the catalyst instead of into it. I don't short a name that is still 7-10% above a 50-EMA rising 1.8-2.3% a month, and I don't own it into the number either. So I stand down, and I re-arm only on a close back over the Oct 26 highs β XOM 184.88, CVX 234.08, COP 152.77 β AFTER the print resolves and the IV is gone. VLO is the tell that keeps me honest: -9.2% to 387.34 on 2.11x volume, closed 4% of range, -16% off its 20-day high while upstream crude only gave back 2%. Refining broke, crude didn't. That's supply, not demand, and a cracking crack spread is a reason to be careful with the barrel, not brave about it. EQT is the exception, and it is the only new risk I'm adding. 56.27, closed 92% of range on 2.05x volume, took out the 200-EMA at 54.92 and kept going to 56.40 β the acquirer in a $50 billion gas merger extending for a second straight session while crude dumps is a tell, not a coincidence. Add over 56.40, kill on a close under 52.29, the deal-day low. If it loses the 20-EMA at 53.73 first, I'm half regardless. What survives as longs is short and boring, which is the point. AAPL 347.10 is still the only mega-cap standing: 20 of 20 closes over the 50-EMA at 332.78, closed 87% of range, 1.3% off its high, back over the 20-EMA at 340.99. Full size, add over 351.73, kill on a close under 340.99, and I am FLAT it the Nov 2 close β no exceptions, no partial, no "just a few." HON 218.81 is the one name I can hold through all of this: reclaimed the 200-EMA at 217.61 and held it, closed 77% of range, January print, no event risk for a quarter β half, add over 223.81, kill on a close back under 217.61. ISRG 445.88 is the cleanest chart nobody is talking about: 20 of 20 closes over the 50-EMA at 409.40, that line sloping +1.95%, +8.9% above it, no print in front of it β half, add over 458.88, kill under 426.96. Health care is being distributed into its own numbers and I'm treating it as a short book, not a long one. CAH 246.45 closed 1% of range with four straight lower closes, -4.9% off its high, sitting 0.6% over the 20-EMA with six sessions of runway to a Nov 5 catalyst β that is weak into a scheduled event WITH time to work, which is the only version of that trade I take. Half-size put on a close under 244.84, out before or right after the number. ELV already fired my trigger β 421.49, closed under 429.84 after never clearing 450.69 β but the print is Oct 28, so no put. Buying a put the day before a print is the IV lottery I say I don't play. ABBV 286.39 and LLY 1281.91 are still the best trends in the group (20/20 and 15/20 over their 50-EMAs, both ~2-3% off their highs) but both print Oct 28, so I'm flat both, and I re-arm after: ABBV on a close over 291.40, LLY over 1297.92. MCK lost 1000 and sits on its 20-EMA at 966.33 β flat into the print, and if it closes back under 966 the whole health sleeve goes half. META is my one short and it is now full size. 620.19 is below the 20-EMA at 687.81, below the 50-EMA at 674.66 which has rolled to -0.91%, and below the 200-EMA at 649.15 β 20.5% off its high, -16.1% in twenty sessions, and it closed 11% of range on 51.7 million shares, 2.67x normal, the session after a $97.5 billion equity offering. The dilution is behind it and the quarter is behind it, so there is no IV crush left between me and the direction. Invalidation on a close back over 649.15, add on a close under 619.21. One name, one side, never both β I will not flip long a $98 billion offering tape because Nvidia put three billion in. MSFT is the tape and it prints Oct 28, and that print is the binary for the whole book: 531.33 with 20 of 20 closes over the 50-EMA at 507.23 and +1.0% over the 20-EMA. A close over 551.15 and I put on a half-size long and give the broken stuff one more day of rope. A close under 525.53 and every long that isn't AAPL, HON or EQT goes to half and every short tightens. GOOGL I will not touch into the number at 320.58, -22% off its high and under all three averages with a 50-EMA rolled -1.04%; only a close under 316.60 AFTER it reports gets a half-size put. Most of this book is event-gated until Nov 2 β AAPL, ABBV, LLY, MCK, ELV, GOOGL, MSFT and all three oil names are bets I'm explicitly not making. Cash is a position and the calendar is the boss.
