Tuesday 10/27 settled it. I scanned forty names and exactly five printed a new 20-day high close: HAS 118.33, EMR 166.27, CSX 52.27, UPS 106.09, RCL 295.92. One name closed above its 60-day high. One. That's the whole board. RCL doesn't count either β it gapped to 308.45 on the Q3 beat and finished 295.92, dead bottom of the range at 6.3% on 2.06x volume. That's a gift being handed to somebody, and it isn't me. Same story on the big frame: of the forty I looked at, not one is above its June peak. HWM -38.1% off its high, CAT -33.6%, AVGO -30.8%, PWR -26.6%, ETN -19.6%, MU -16.2%. New highs are bullish. I know that's not deep. It's also just true β but the corollary is the trade this week: when five names out of forty can print one, you don't lower the bar, you shrink the card.
Four of last week's names got killed by my own rules and I'm not arguing with any of them. CTAS closed 214.80, through my 220.50 stop, -4.9% on 2.80x with a 209.00 low β out. WELL closed 226.72, straight through the 235.50 stop, -5.8% on 2.36x β out. IBM closed 250.25 back under the 251.81 pivot it broke on 10/22, which is a failed breakout and an exit on that bar β out. ISRG never earned its add: it needed a close above 459.00 and stalled at 458/459 a third session; Tuesday it opened AT its high of 451.63 and closed 445.88 at 26% of range β that's distribution at the level, out. PGR rolled to 225.60 with four down days in five, out. And to be clear about the loudest thing in the tape: the memory and storage complex is not a new-high trade. STX is 34.1% below its 60-day high, WDC 32.6%, SNDK 31.7%, MU 16.2%. The sector snapshot says C07 semis lead with +42.6% over three months, and every one of its leaders is 30-50% under its own high. That is a bounce inside a broken chart. I don't bottom-fish and I don't buy bounces, no matter how much volume they do.
The card. HAS is the position and the only genuine 6-month high on my board β 119.32 today, six straight up closes, +34% in twenty sessions, +14.1% above its 20-day EMA, 1.21x volume. Add above 119.40 on >1x, out on a close below 114.50; that 10/20 gap from 98.49 to 109.52 is air underneath, not support, so runaway size is small and the leash is tight. CSX is my best new add: it took the 52.15 60-day high on 10/22 at 2.83x, then flagged three sessions with rising lows (50.22, 51.07, 51.10) and closed 52.27 at 90.7% of range β add above 52.45 on 1.1x, out on a close below 51.00, and the real test is 53.60 from July. UPS is the best volume-confirmed breakout on the board: beat and raised, high 106.58, closed 106.09 at 92.9% of range on 2.34x β add above 106.70 on >1x, out on a close below 99.50, the earnings-gap floor; 109.42 is the 60-day ceiling and clearing it is the next leg. EMR made a 6-month high at 166.60 and closed 166.27 at 93% of range, but on 0.94x β not enough conviction for me, so it's a trigger only: add above 166.70 on >1.1x, out on a close below 161.80. ULTA is a coil, not a breakout: four sessions pinned under 637.26 with volume drying 1.43x to 0.96 to 0.81 to 0.59 β that's a coil, not distribution; distribution is heavy volume with no progress. Add above 637.50 on >1x, out on a close below 617.80. ABBV is a trigger and nothing more: eight sessions under 291.40, add above 289.70 on >1x, out on a close below 283.00. Not touching MCK, which closed at 2.0% of range and -6.1%, or SPGI, which opened 470, printed 474.61 and closed 448.93 at 8.3% of range on 1.95x β that's a distribution bar, not a setup.
Hard rules, unchanged and non-negotiable. Nothing gets added that isn't making a new high this week. Volume >1x or it's not a buy. A close below a stop line is out on that bar β no averaging down, no rethinking, no "but the earnings were good." A breakout that closes back under the prior high is out on that bar, and that rule just cost me CTAS, IBM, WELL and ISRG in five sessions. If the new-high list stays at five names, I hold cash rather than hunt. I'd rather own four things going up than twenty things going sideways.
Cleanest structural breakout: took the 52.15 60-day high on 10/22 at 2.83x, then a three-day flag with rising lows (50.22 / 51.07 / 51.10), closed 52.27 at 90.7% of range. Add above 52.45 on >1.1x; out on a close below 51.00. Next ceiling 53.60 from July is the real test.
Coil, not a breakout. Four sessions pinned under the 637.26 high with volume drying 1.43x to 0.96 to 0.81 to 0.59. Declining volume at a high is a coil; distribution is heavy volume with no progress. Add above 637.50 on >1x; out on a close below 617.80.
New 6-month high at 166.60, closed 166.27 at 93% of range β but only 0.94x volume, so it is a trigger, not a buy. Add above 166.70 on >1.1x; out on a close below 161.80. Earnings 11/4: I do not add into the print.
Trigger and nothing more β eight sessions stuck under the 291.40 high with fading tape (0.70x Tuesday). Add above 289.70 on >1x; out on a close below 283.00.
Best volume confirmation on the board: beat and raised, high 106.58, closed 106.09 at 92.9% of range on 2.34x, new 20-day high. Add above 106.70 on >1x; out on a close below 99.50, the earnings-gap floor. Clearing the 109.42 60-day ceiling is the next leg.
The position and the only true 6-month high on the board (119.32). Six straight up closes, +34% in 20 sessions, 1.21x volume, +14.1% over the 20-day EMA. Add above 119.40 on >1x; out on a close below 114.50. Runaway = smallest size, tightest leash; the 10/20 gap from 98.49 to 109.52 is air, not support.
