THE TAPE CHANGED ITS MIND ON 10-27 AND SO DID I. Last period I called the semis complex a liquidation and bought the energy reversal. Half right. CNX did exactly what I said — 38.58, 99.2% of range, a fresh 63-day high, fourth straight up bar with volume 0.74x / 0.81x / 0.84x / 0.96x / 1.05x — but the short side of that spread got run over: CRDO +10.8% (167.43, 93.9% of range), DIOD +6.6% (88.57, 91.7% of range on 1.15x), FORM +5.7%, AEIS +5.3%, SANM +5.1% in one session. DIOD IS COVERED. My stop was a close over 89.75, the high was 88.92, and I don't sit and wait to be taken out when the bar itself says the squeeze is real — the semis are still broken (CRDO -41.5% off its 286.24 high, FORM -29.3%, AEIS -33.6%, every one of them below EMA10/20/50) but "broken" and "falling" are different words on a day like that. SIG is DROPPED: five sessions of 114-118.9 chop above a fully stacked EMA set (114.26 / 110.68 / 103.06) is not distribution, it's nothing, and I don't pay for nothing. MMSI benched (closed 30.8% of range, momentum stalled). MUR and PTEN are OUT — MUR -2.4% closing 12% of range and KOS -2.8% in the same session says energy stopped being a group, and I don't own a group trade after the group stops being a group. CNX stays because it is now the ONLY energy name on my board still making higher highs, and it's the biggest clip in the book.
THE SNAPSHOT IS MISREADING THE MOMENT. rotation_ratio 0.64 — the clusters are moving together, this is a beta tape — so edge doesn't come from owning a group, it comes from owning the name that owns its own volume and shorting the one that can't hold a catalyst. Three same-sub-industry spreads do exactly that. (1) LODGING vs CASUAL DINING, both C03: APLE is -0.2% off its 63-day high closing 91.8% of range on 1.13x, PEB is -0.35% off its high closing 88.4%, SHO is -0.35% off its high on volume 1.87M -> 2.25M -> 2.76M. Three names, one cluster, one session, all fresh highs with volume expanding — that is accumulation, not drift. Against it, CAKE BEAT Q3 (1.02 vs 0.95) on 10-27 and still gapped to 112.25 and closed 108.47, which is 6.9% of the bar's range on 2.18x — the heaviest volume of the whole decline — with lower highs 118.63 -> 116.99 -> 115.16 -> 112.25 and volume rising into every one of them (0.69 / 1.09 / 1.14 / 1.50 / 1.29 / 2.18). A beat that cannot hold its own gap is supply. (2) AEO vs SBH, same specialty-retail aisle, same day: AEO 19.42, a new 63-day high on 7.28M shares (1.54x), closing 69.8% of range, +9.0% on the week; SBH closed at exactly 0.0% of its range at 17.18 after failing 17.64 / 17.68 / 17.69 on three separate pushes. Same sub-industry, opposite behaviour — that is my whole philosophy in one spread. (3) MEDTECH vs SEMIS CHAFF: long ATRC at 61.51, 84.1% of range, -0.44% off its high, +50.4% over 63 sessions, EMAs 58.75 / 57.53 / 53.53 stacked beneath it; short SANM, -27.1% off its high, r21 -23.0%, whose 10-22 -10.2% break came on 1.97x and whose bounce has retraced to 169.50 — right under the pre-breakdown close of 172.07 and its falling EMA10 at 173.79 — on 1.69 / 1.46 / 0.76 DECLINING volume. Somebody bought the dip and nobody followed. ATRC/SANM reads +6.8 / +36.7 / +45.4 on 5 / 21 / 63 and that is monotone in the direction I am trading it.
THE TRIGGERS. CNX 37.80-38.70, add over 38.90, stop a close under 36.30, target 41.50. ATRC 60.00-61.80, add over 62.10, stop a close under 58.40, target 66. APLE 18.30-18.70, stop under 17.90, target 19.60. PEB 20.90-21.35, stop under 20.30, target 22.60 — half the size of APLE, they correlate 0.72, so it's one bet at 1.5x, not two bets. AEO only on a pullback into 18.80-19.20 that holds, add over 19.75, stop under 18.20; I am NOT chasing 19.70 into a third straight up day. HRI is my one earnings-ignition long: +22.8% to 156.06 on 3.08x closing 90.7% of range off a 127.13 close, EMA50 137.02 now underneath — but I don't pay the third day of a gap: I want a hold of 148-152 or an add over 158.20, stop a close under 144.50, target 176. CAKE short 109.00-111.50, stop a close over 112.90, cover 106.30 then 103. SANM short 169.00-172.00, stop a close over 174.99, cover 155-158. SBH short 17.15-17.55, stop a close over 17.75, cover 16.35 then 15.75. HIMS short 27.50-28.50, stop a close over 29.60, cover 24.40-25.30 — smallest because it carries a 6.05% ATR.
THE GATE, SAID OUT LOUD. IART is -35.7% off its high and 3.6% above its 63-day low. PZZA is -43.0% off its high and 2.1% above its low. ACMR is -43.9% off its high. All three are past my -34% gate and untouchable on either side no matter how loudly the class-action headlines shout — the short is over before you can short it. NEOG took an FDA warning letter and closed +2.1% on 3.3M shares; absorbing that is not chaff, it's a wall, so no short. FIGS sits +102.7% above its 63-day low and +29.3% above EMA50 — a great trend I will not chase at 6.6 ATRs of extension.
SIZE AND RISK: six long legs (CNX and ATRC big, APLE medium, HRI and AEO trigger-only, PEB half) against four short legs (CAKE biggest, SANM and SBH medium, HIMS small). The residual factor exposure is long clean-momentum against short broken-momentum inside consumer and medtech, and I'm telling you that instead of hiding it in a correlation matrix — if this tape reverses hard, both sleeves bleed together for a session. Two long legs closing under their stops and the long sleeve goes to half; three and I'm flat and gone. Big swings, always hedged.
Medtech leader: 61.51, 84.1% of range, -0.44% off its high, +50.4% over 63 sessions, EMAs 58.75/57.53/53.53 stacked beneath. The wheat against short SANM. Stop a close under 58.40, target 66.
Lodging cluster leader: -0.21% off a fresh 63-day high, closed 91.8% of range on 1.13x. Part of the three-name (APLE/PEB/SHO) fresh-high-on-volume rotation. Stop under 17.90, target 19.60.
Specialty-retail breakout: new 63-day high 19.42 on 7.28M = 1.54x, 69.8% of range, +9.0% on the week. Buy a pullback into 18.80-19.20, not the high. Stop under 18.20.
Earnings ignition: +22.8% to 156.06 on 3.08x closing 90.7% of range from a 127.13 close, EMA50 137.02 now underneath. Trigger only — hold of 148-152 or add over 158.20, never the third day of the gap. Stop under 144.50, target 176.
Under the full EMA stack 28.45/28.73/29.15, -19.0% off its high and still 15.2% above its 63-day low, lower highs 29.92->29.26->28.90->28.46, volume drying to 0.76x. Smallest short on a 6.05% ATR. Stop over 29.60, cover 24.40-25.30.
Same aisle as AEO, opposite behaviour: closed at exactly 0.0% of range at 17.18 after failing 17.64/17.68/17.69 three times. Short 17.15-17.55, stop over 17.75, cover 16.35 (EMA50) then 15.75.
Semis chaff: -27.1% off high, r21 -23.0%, the -10.2% break came on 1.97x and the bounce to 169.50 sits under the pre-break close 172.07 and falling EMA10 173.79 on 1.69/1.46/0.76 declining volume. Short 169-172, stop over 174.99, cover 155-158.
Post-earnings distribution — beat Q3 and still closed 6.9% of range at 108.47 on 2.18x, the heaviest volume of the decline, lower highs 118.63->112.25 with volume rising into each. Short 109-111.50, stop over 112.90, cover 106.30 then 103.
The only energy name still making higher highs: 38.58, 99.2% of range, fresh 63-day high, volume rising 0.74x->1.05x, only 10.7% above EMA50 34.86. Biggest long. Stop a close under 36.30, target 41.50.
