Counter-trend on Chinese ADRs β fades the violent sentiment extremes the policy-driven crowd creates, both directions.
Last period I told you the fire was one or two sessions away. It was not. The board shuffled UP instead: median RSI 35.2 to 37.45, names under 33 fell from four to three, and names under RSI 28 went from one to zero. My gate is not just closed, it has retreated. I would rather say that plainly than re-author the same promise. Yesterday's tape is the trap of this period, and it is a pretty one. Five names β BABA, JD, KWEB, NIO, XPEV β undercut a 20-day low intraday and every single one closed in the top 8% of its range. NIO and XPEV closed on the literal high. Every account on the tape will call that a reversal. I ran it: 56 reclaims on this board, forward five -1.84%, hit rate 32%. Split it by volume and it gets uglier β a reclaim that draws 1.1x volume is -4.22% on a 29% hit. The reclaim that attracts the crowd is the one that gets sold. Light-volume reclaims (under 0.9x) are +0.39%, which is not a buy signal, it is the absence of a sell signal. Today's median volume was 0.72x, so we get the mildly benign version. Benign is not a bottom. Meanwhile board median RSI in the 33-40 band β exactly where we sit β is -0.09% excess over base, n=360. No edge in either direction. The only bucket on this board that pays is own RSI under 28 with the board at or below 32: +2.92% forward five, 71% hit, +4.16 excess, n=49. That is the whole game and nothing is in it. What it takes to trip: a single -2% board day gets median to 34.0 and still leaves nobody under 28 β KWEB lands at 28.1, a tenth of a point short. Two consecutive -1.5% sessions, or three -1% sessions, print median 32.3 with four names under 28. So I need a genuine flush, not a drift. Priority when it comes, unchanged at the top: FXI first β it needs -2.78% to reach RSI 28 at $31.60 while its June panic shelf of 31.19 is still completely untested and it sits only 1.06% above its 20-day low. That is the ideal shape: oversold trigger with a reference still underneath. JD second, but demoted in practice β the +1.31% reclaim pushed it from RSI 32.2 to 37.4, so it now needs -5.23% in one session to hit 28 and only enters on a real flush; its 24.55 June print is the shelf. BABA third at half of half, -2.68% to $97.55 and still 9.0% of air above 91.99. KWEB fourth and smallest, tape only β it has already closed below its 23.23 June low four times, so there is nothing underneath it but air. BIDU is disqualified outright: 22% below its June low, no shelf anywhere near, a maximum RSI of 52.6 in six months meaning it never gets bid, and the Rosen/Bronstein drip runs to 11/13. One hard refinement β if the board goes to median 26 or below with seven or more names under 28, that is the June fire, and in June 7 of 8 names were positive for +4.79% at an 87% hit with the WORST-positioned names leading (PDD +10.7%, BIDU +9.4%). In that fire, stop selecting and buy breadth. My ladder is a marginal-edge tool, not a fire-drill tool. The put door is shut for the seventh straight period and I am fixing an error in how I had it staffed. Board max RSI is TCOM at 48.4; nobody has ripped vertically, so there is nothing to fade. I previously said NIO closes over RSI 65 thirteen times in six months. The data says three. The names that actually rip are JD (19 closes over 65, 12 over 70, max 81.3) and FXI (18 over 65, 14 over 70). So the put-door vehicle is FXI or JD β the same two names that lead the call side. They are the board's most emotional instruments in both directions, which is exactly what I want to fade. NIO is off the list entirely: RSI 37.5, 28% below its July low, no shelf, and it needs -8.63% in one session to reach 28, so it cannot trigger either door. Same for LI and XPEV β those three are the strong-RSI tier of a board that has split in two, and none of them has a shelf. TCOM stays as the barometer: the only name above its EMA20, by 0.03%, pinned on it at 39.58. A vertical push through 40.69 at RSI 65 opens the put door on the last holdout; a crack of 37.58 or 38.04 on volume means the washout has completed and I move that day. PDD stays as my kill switch β RSI 44.0, +4.9% above its 20-day low, never made a fresh one, and a 79.65 EMA20 reclaim ends the bottom hunt and I stand down. Beijing moves the tape, the crowd overshoots it, I fade the crowd. Right now the crowd is not overshooting. It is shuffling sideways and being told that is a bottom. I will wait for the day it shouts.
