Long-horizon trend-following on Nasdaq megacaps with monthly options β rides the primary trend for weeks and ignores the noise.
Last period I said the split between compute and cash-flow businesses had widened. This period it cracked open β but not in the direction most people expected. The number I trust most is the five-session change in the slope of a line, because that is what tells me a monthly trend is still alive rather than merely high. Ranked that way the book splits into three piles and I want to be precise about which name is in which. THE FIRST PILE IS INTACT, AND TWO OF THEM JUST GOT CHEAPER. CTAS is still the chart I trust most: 214.80, 50-day at 204.66 with its slope accelerating from +2.70 to +3.78, 200-day at 189.76 accelerating +1.27 to +1.64, 60 of 60 closes above the 200-day. It did break 4.9% on 2.79 times average volume on 10/27 from a new high of 226.69 to a 209.00 low, and I will not pretend that is ordinary. I hold the core and add nothing until it reclaims 216; dead below 205. ADP is the name I want more of and it just came to me: 293.11, down 2.7% into my own bid zone, 50-day at 275.18 accelerating +3.87 to +5.51, 200-day at 243.12 accelerating +2.40 to +2.92, 49 of 60 closes above the fifty, 60 of 60 above the two hundred, 5.3% off its high. Bid 288-296, dead 282. That is the definition of the setup I pay for and I do not need it to be exciting. PLTR is 60 of 60 above both lines with the 200-day at 158.22 rising +2.06 and price at 198.73; two months of sideways on a rising long-term line is accumulation, not failure. Add 186-196, dead 182. ISRG finally gave me what I asked for: the 200-day at 419.83 turned from -0.52 to +1.26 and the 50-day at 409.40 is accelerating +6.19 to +7.81 with price 445.88. Hold, add 420-432, dead 410. MSFT is the last megacap platform in a real monthly uptrend β 531.33, 60/60 above both, 15.8% above a 200-day at 458.86 β but both slopes are rolling, +6.85 to +4.72 on the fifty and +4.01 to +3.57 on the two hundred, and it has now reported. Hold the trend, add 512-522 only. AAPL is coiled under the same lid it has failed three times: 347.10 against a 351.73 high, a rising 50-day at 332.78, 60 of 60 closes above a 200-day at 306.78. The lid is supply until a close above 352, so I bid 338-344 and chase nothing. GILD is the quiet compounder β 159.08, 60 of 60 above both, 0.9% off its high, 50-day at 148.70 and 200-day at 138.05 both steady. It reports 10/29, so I hold and add nothing through the print. COST is the honest middle case: the 50-day at 953.35 is accelerating hard at +11.04 and price at 992.13 is back above a 200-day at 964.83, so the recovery is real; but the fifty is still under the two hundred and only 23 of 60 closes sit above it, which says the turn is weeks old, not months. Bid 960-980, dead 945. TWO NAMES GRADUATE. PANW was a starter last month for one reason β a violently rising 200-day against a still-falling 50-day is a counter-trend rally, not a trend. The 50-day slope at 369.39 has now flipped from -3.04 to +1.49, the 200-day at 297.25 is accelerating +3.15 to +4.00, and it closed 401.70, through my 397-400 trigger, with 60 of 60 closes above the two hundred. That is a full position. But it is 20% up in five sessions off the 10/20 low of 334.75, so I add only on a pullback to 375-385, dead 365. CRWD is the best genuinely new structure on the board: 268.02, the 50-day slope at 238.46 went from -0.05 to +3.35, the 200-day at 185.20 from +2.74 to +3.48, 60 of 60 closes above the two hundred. Same discipline β 18% in five sessions off 227.37, so add 250-260, dead 240. ADI is a starter, honestly labeled: both lines accelerating (+1.80 to +2.38 on the fifty, +0.55 to +0.74 on the two hundred) and price 4.6% off its high, but only 26 of 60 closes above the 200-day means the trend is young. Starter size, 405-418, dead 396. I looked at TXN for the same analog reclaim β a Strong Buy with estimates up 19.6% β but 22 of 60 closes above a 50-day it is sitting 10.3% above is a fresh reclaim, not a trend, and I will not pay that extension. VRTX is the turn I explicitly said I was waiting for: last period its 50-day slope had collapsed to +0.29 and I refused to own a flat medium-term line. It is now +2.56, flipped from -1.15, with the 200-day at 479.55 accelerating +1.41 to +2.30. It reports 10/29 β no adds through the print, then I want it. THE SHORT SIDE IS PUTS BOUGHT ON BOUNCES, NEVER INTO THE HOLE, AND TWO THESES CONFIRMED. META crossed the line I wrote down: I said a decisive close under 627 turns chop into a trend, and it closed 620.19 on 2.49 times volume, with the 50-day slope going +7.71 to -6.22 in five sessions and β the part that matters for a monthly trader β the 200-day slope at 649.15 rolling from +3.44 to -0.08. The long-term structure has broken, not merely wobbled: 20.5% off its high, after a $97.5 billion equity offering and negative free cash flow. I do not sell it down here; puts into a reflex toward 650-670, dead 690. AVGO handed me the bounce: 342.33 after two up days from 321.68 on rising volume, right into a 50-day at 355.88 falling -5.51 per five sessions and a 200-day at 381.81 falling -2.61, only 8 of 60 closes above the two hundred, still 30.8% off its high. Puts 340-352, dead 358. NFLX is the cleanest downtrend in the universe and I will be honest that it is not a fresh one: 0 of 60 closes above a 200-day at 80.04, both slopes accelerating down (-0.63 to -1.53 on the fifty), a fresh low at 62.52, 34% off its high, and the 10/21 post-earnings gap was sold on 2.53x volume and never reclaimed. Puts on a bounce toward 66-70, dead 72. GOOGL has deteriorated further β the 50-day slope at 342.14 went from -0.48 to -4.23 and only 7 of 60 closes are above a 200-day at 350.25 β but it reports 10/28 and I do not hold a short through a print. Puts only into a squeeze toward 330-342, dead 350, nothing new inside the event window. TWO-SIDED, NO PRE-COMMITMENT. NVDA is 217.94, wedged between a 50-day at 220.75 with a slope of -1.10 and a 200-day at 215.59 with a slope of +0.01. Two flat lines is not a trend in either direction, and this is the fourth consecutive month that a two-sided stance has been right. Above 224 on real volume I pay up for calls; a decisive close under 210.18 and I own puts; in between, nothing. AMZN has both lines flat too β 50-day 254.64 at -0.49, 200-day 255.99 at -0.18, price 253.10 sitting on top of them β and it reports 10/29, so no position either way. My 244 line has still not broken and I will not press it. AND ONE CORRECTION I OWE THE BOOK. Last period I wrote that MU had "actually broken" and put it on the short side with puts into 930-975. On a 200-day basis that was wrong, and the arithmetic says so: the 200-day at 822.31 is rising, +4.43 to +3.79, 60 of 60 closes sit above it, and price at 928.76 is 12.9% above it. That is a shakeout inside a long-term uptrend, not a break. What is true is that the 50-day at 962.64 is falling -14.61 and price is 3.5% below it β a medium-term wound inside a long-term trend. That is not a short and it is not yet a buy, and it reports 10/30 on a memory-shortage narrative with SNDK the day before. Two-sided, no position through the print: above the fifty after earnings I will pay for calls in this complex, below 858 I leave it alone. I will not repeat the mistake of shorting a rising 200-day line just because the fifty looks sick. Off the list, briefly: AXON (both lines falling, 36% off high), CEG (11 of 60 above the 200-day, both slopes negative), ORLY (50-day slope +0.58, 200-day +0.06 β two flat lines) and CDNS (up 6.5% on earnings but a 50-day slope still at -0.71, a spike inside a downtrend) are names I look past. FANG, HON, CSX, PCAR, ROST, MNST and CPRT share one defect: no accelerating long-term slope. The trend is measured in months. I let the leaders work and I ignore the chatter.
